Response to: "Community Post #1 Exposing Hidden Biases at Google to Improve Diversity"

The numbers of men employees over power the number of women working at tech companies.  tells us how statistics show that men make up 83 percent of Google’s employees. This only leaves 17% of the other employees to consist of women. However with all the sexist comments and put downs by the other male workers, what woman would want to work there? To got to work everyday and be humiliated by fellow co-workers who think they're better because "this is a man's world" and women do not belong is cruel punishment that is definitely not needed. As long as the women have the same qualifications as the men, they should be hired based on the fact that they are capable of the same things. However, this is not how it is. Women are not given the same opportunities as men in the tech as well as many other industries. Bias in the favor of men in  this work force plays key role of the inequality towards the way things are run.

If a woman has the same capability and skill level as that of a man, shouldn't they both have an equal opportunity of getting the job? This is how it should work in the world we live in today, right? Well, this is not the case. Men are considered for more jobs over women because women aren't seen at the same level. Mr. Bock, Google’s executive in charge of human resources, presents evidence that shows diverse teams can be more creative than homogeneous ones (). Big companies are trying to change things to be more impartial. However, when a person is subjected to unethical bias and doesn't have the opportunity to accomplish their goals in the work force, these companies have failed.

  1. I share the same view as you; especially when you mention how women wouldn't want to work at a place where they're disrespected. I read an article where women are blamed for the sexual harassment they get from men. They say it's a woman's fault that she's attractive and that she is the one need to do something about it. Why should a women be blamed for a man who can't control his urges? In a situation, like this he's acting like a ignorant child. They also mention how women should just accept these harassments if they wanted to succeed. Instead of leaving it on the back burner, they should come face to face with these issues and fight it. A women should not to quit a job that is perfectly qualified for them just because a man can't handle himself.

  2. Hey, Indya, I enjoyed reading your post. I too feel like women are placed behind men in society. They should have the same rights as men. To further expand, I would like to add that women should be treated as human beings. They deserve to have opportunities to do what they want to do; to a certain extent (i.e. law). That being said, thanks for a great read! Check out my blog!

  3. I enjoyed your response to the article, and thought your perspective was interesting. I agree with the fact that women have the same capabilities as a man. Although its a possibility that women don't want to do these jobs due to sexist comments and put downs by men, I believe the main reason women don't want to pursue these careers is due to the implications society has placed on them. Even if a woman has the skill, they feel as if they are "obliged" to pursue certain careers, due to the gender roles society has placed on them. I found your response creative, and look forward to reading more from your blog. :)

  4. I fully agree with everything you said, I also believe everyone should have equal opportunities to succeed no matter your gender. I find it disappointing that in this day and age, society still focuses more on the gender of a person instead of their skill level. I also enjoyed that you referred back to the quote " diverse teams can be more creative than homogeneous ones" because it was a phrase I noticed many students seemed to skip over and instead talk about how Google is doing great and we should just leave it as is. Diversity in the workplace is shown to produce better results and you included that, which is great.

  5. I enjoyed your post and agreed with your points, and like Sai says i believe that gender roles developed by society plays a part in the careers women follow even though they are as capable or even more so than many men. The imbalance of gender in Google and other companies is totally unfair and there has not been enough done to open up the work place to women by getting rid of discrimination and inappropriate behavior. In many of the blogs they have been understandably discussing a problem with shifting bias towards women and I personally don't see this as something to fear, something has to be done without excuses.

  6. I agree to the fact that women may face verbal abuse in the workplace. Women should have the right to retaliate to this abuse, but privileges of women are possibly being taken too far. For example, the names of conference rooms in Google's new office building were changed from names of male scientists to presumably a mix of male and female names. It has come to the point that memorials to great scientists must be removed in order to appease the "offended." Though Google is taking efforts to improve status of women in their company, this is not the correct place to be placing these efforts.
